Gargoyle Gecko Care Sheet
(Rhacodactylus auriculatus)
Overview
Gargoyle geckos are hardy arboreal geckos native to New Caledonia. They are closely related to crested geckos and share many of the same care requirements. Their distinctive horn-like crests above the eyes give them their name. Gargoyle geckos are generally calm, easy to care for, and suitable for beginners.
Quick Facts
Scientific Name: Rhacodactylus auriculatus
Common Name: Gargoyle Gecko
Origin: New Caledonia
Adult Size: 15–20 cm (6–8 inches)
Lifespan: 15–20 years with proper care
Difficulty Level: Beginner–Intermediate
Enclosure
Gargoyle geckos are arboreal and require vertical space for climbing.
Recommended enclosure sizes:
- Juveniles: 30 × 30 × 45 cm (12 × 12 × 18 inches)
- Adults: 45 × 45 × 60 cm (18 × 18 × 24 inches)
The enclosure should include:
- Branches and vines for climbing
- Live or artificial plants for cover
- Hides for security
- A humidity-retaining substrate such as coco fibre or bioactive soil mix
Provide good ventilation to prevent stagnant air.
Temperature
Gargoyle geckos prefer moderate temperatures.
Recommended temperature range:
- Daytime: 22–26°C (72–78°F)
- Basking spot: up to 27–29°C (80–85°F)
- Night: 18–22°C (64–72°F)
Avoid temperatures above 29°C (85°F) as prolonged heat can be dangerous.
Most homes provide suitable temperatures, but a small heat source controlled by a thermostat may be required in cooler environments.
Humidity
Maintain moderate humidity levels.
- Daytime humidity: 50–60%
- After misting: 70–80%
Mist the enclosure once or twice daily to allow the gecko to drink water droplets from leaves and glass. Humidity should be allowed to drop between mistings.
Provide a small water dish with fresh water at all times.
Lighting
Gargoyle geckos are nocturnal and do not require strong lighting.
Recommended lighting:
- 12-hour day/night cycle
- Low-level UVB (2–5%) is beneficial but optional
UVB lighting may help support vitamin D3 production and overall health.
Diet
Gargoyle geckos are omnivores and eat both insects and fruit.
Typical captive diet:
- Commercial complete gecko diets (Pangea, Repashy, etc.)
- Live insects such as crickets or dubia roaches
- Occasional fruit treats (banana, mango, or papaya)
Feeding schedule:
- Juveniles: daily
- Adults: every other day
Insects should be dusted with calcium powder.
Handling
Gargoyle geckos can become tame with regular gentle handling, although they may be shy at first.
Handling tips:
- Allow the gecko to walk onto your hand
- Avoid grabbing from above
- Keep handling sessions short initially
Unlike crested geckos, gargoyle geckos can regrow their tails if dropped.
