Crested Gecko Diet

Crested Gecko Diet Guide

Crested geckos are omnivores that eat a mix of fruit, nectar and insects in the wild. In captivity, they do exceptionally well on commercially prepared Crested Gecko Diets (CGD), which provide complete nutrition in a convenient powder format. This guide covers everything you need to feed your crested gecko correctly.

Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) — The Staple Food

CGD powders are the cornerstone of crested gecko nutrition. When mixed with water to a smooth paste, they provide a balanced diet that can be fed as the sole food source if needed. The most popular and trusted brands are:

  • Pangea Fruit Mix — available in a range of flavours including Watermelon & Mango, Fig & Insect, and Banana & Papaya. Highly palatable and nutritionally complete.
  • Repashy Crested Gecko MRP — one of the original CGD formulas, trusted by keepers for years. Available in classic and flavoured varieties.
  • Gecko Nutrition — a premium CGD brand offering high-quality, carefully formulated diets for crested geckos and other New Caledonian species.

All brands are available in the Gecko Pantry shop with fast UK delivery.

How to Mix CGD

  • Mix 1 part CGD powder with 2 parts water (by volume).
  • Stir until smooth with no lumps.
  • Serve in a small dish or on a magnetic feeding ledge at height.
  • Remove and replace any uneaten CGD after 24–48 hours to prevent spoilage.

Live Feeder Insects

While CGD alone can sustain a crested gecko, offering live insects 1–2 times per week provides enrichment and boosts protein intake — especially beneficial for juveniles, breeding females and underweight geckos.

  • Crickets — the most widely available feeder insect. Gut-load before feeding and dust with calcium supplement.
  • Dubia roaches — a nutritious, low-odour alternative to crickets. Highly recommended.
  • Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) — excellent calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, great as an occasional treat.
  • Waxworms and mealworms — high in fat; use sparingly as treats only.

Always size feeders appropriately — no wider than the space between the gecko's eyes.

Supplements

Dusting live feeders with the right supplements is essential for long-term health:

  • Calcium without D3 — use at most feedings to support bone health.
  • Calcium with D3 — use 1–2 times per month if your gecko has no UVB lighting.
  • Multivitamin — use once every 1–2 weeks to cover any nutritional gaps.

Feeding Frequency

  • Juveniles (under 6 months): Fresh CGD every day; live insects 3x per week.
  • Sub-adults (6–12 months): Fresh CGD every 1–2 days; live insects 2x per week.
  • Adults: Fresh CGD every 2–3 days; live insects 1–2x per week.

Water

Always provide a shallow dish of fresh water, even though crested geckos often prefer to drink droplets from misting. Change the water every 1–2 days.
