The Sarasinorum gecko (Correlophus sarasinorum, formerly Rhacodactylus sarasinorum) is a slender, elegant New Caledonian gecko that sits between the crested gecko and Chahoua gecko in terms of size and care complexity. Often called “Saras” in the hobby, they are active, arboreal geckos that use vertical space extensively and benefit from a tall, well-planted enclosure.

Enclosure Size
- Juveniles: A 30x30x45cm enclosure is suitable to start, making feeding and monitoring easy.
- Sub-adults and adults: A minimum of 45x45x60cm is recommended. 45x45x90cm or larger is ideal and gives the best results for active adult Saras.
- Cohabitation: Sarasinorum geckos are generally more tolerant of cohabitation than some other New Caledonian species, but males should never be housed together. A male-female pair or a small group of females can work in adequately sized setups, but all cohabiting groups should be monitored closely for signs of stress, weight loss or competition.
Enclosure Types
- Front-opening glass terrariums — the most popular and practical choice. Good ventilation, easy access, and allows good observation of this active species.
- PVC enclosures — excellent humidity retention and insulation. A good option for UK winters.
- Bioactive vivariums — highly recommended. Sarasinorum geckos thrive in naturalistic, planted bioactive setups and the stable microclimate benefits their health long-term.
Substrate
A moisture-retaining substrate is essential for maintaining the humidity Sarasinorum geckos require. A bioactive mix of topsoil, coconut fibre, and orchid bark works well. Coconut fibre alone or a peat and sand mix are good alternatives. For young juveniles or quarantine setups, paper towel is safe and easy to monitor.
Hides and Décor
Sarasinorum geckos are active climbers and spend most of their time elevated. They are slender and fast-moving and appreciate a well-furnished enclosure with plenty of cover at all levels.
- Cork bark tubes and flats at mid and upper heights — Saras prefer to rest and hide off the ground
- Sturdy branches and vines at varying heights and angles for climbing and perching
- Live or artificial plants (pothos, bromeliads, Epipremnum) for cover and humidity
- A ground-level hide in addition to elevated options gives choice
- Magnetic feeding ledges work well — Saras readily use elevated feeding stations
Ventilation
Good airflow is important alongside moderate to high humidity. A mesh top with partially covered sides, or a PVC enclosure with cross-ventilation, balances humidity retention with fresh air circulation. Monitor humidity with a digital hygrometer and adjust misting frequency seasonally.
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Spot clean droppings and uneaten food daily
- Replace water every 1–2 days
- For non-bioactive setups, full substrate changes every 3–6 months
- Bioactive setups require minimal intervention once established — top up substrate and leaf litter as needed and monitor the clean-up crew
