Gargoyle Gecko Diet

Gargoyle Gecko Diet Guide

Gargoyle geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) are omnivores with a diet similar to crested geckos in captivity — a combination of fruit-based CGD and live insects. Gargoyle geckos are often more enthusiastic live feeders than crested geckos and benefit from a higher proportion of insect prey in their diet.

Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) — The Staple Food

CGD powders provide a nutritionally complete, fruit-based meal that Gargoyle geckos accept readily. Mix with water to a smooth paste and offer in a dish or on a magnetic feeding ledge.

  • Pangea Fruit Mix — highly palatable with a range of flavours. The Fig & Insect and Watermelon formulas are popular with Gargoyle geckos.
  • Repashy Crested Gecko MRP — a trusted, nutritionally complete formula suitable for all New Caledonian geckos including Gargoyles.
  • Gecko Nutrition — premium CGD carefully formulated for New Caledonian geckos.

Replace uneaten CGD every 24–48 hours to prevent spoilage.

Live Feeder Insects

Gargoyle geckos should be offered live prey regularly — they are more insectivorous than crested geckos and respond enthusiastically to live feeding. Live insects also provide essential enrichment and stimulation.

  • Crickets — a staple feeder; gut-load well before offering and dust with calcium.
  • Dubia roaches — highly nutritious and easy to keep; an excellent staple feeder for Gargoyle geckos.
  • Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) — great calcium source; use regularly.
  • Locusts — a good occasional variety feeder.
  • Waxworms — high fat; use only as an occasional treat.

Always size feeders no wider than the space between your gecko’s eyes.

Supplements

  • Calcium without D3 — dust live feeders at every feeding.
  • Calcium with D3 — use 1–2 times per month if no UVB is provided.
  • Multivitamin — use once every 1–2 weeks.

Feeding Frequency

See our dedicated Gargoyle Gecko Feeding Schedule for a full breakdown by age group including juveniles, sub-adults, adults and breeding females.

Water

Always provide a shallow dish of fresh water, changed every 1–2 days. Gargoyle geckos will also drink water droplets from misting, so a consistent misting routine is important.
