Sarasinorum Gecko Temperature & Humidity

Sarasinorum geckos come from the humid forests of New Caledonia and share very similar environmental requirements to crested and gargoyle geckos. They thrive in cool, humid conditions and are sensitive to high temperatures. The UK climate suits them well for much of the year.

Temperature

Ideal Temperature Range

Daytime ambient temperature: 20–24°C (68–75°F)
Night-time temperature: Can drop to 16–19°C (61–66°F) — a natural overnight cool-down is beneficial
Maximum safe temperature: Do not exceed 26–27°C for any extended period

In most UK homes, room temperature falls comfortably within the ideal range for much of the year. No additional heating is needed in spring, summer or autumn in most cases.

UK-Specific Advice

Summer heatwaves: Temperatures above 27°C can be dangerous. Keep enclosures away from south-facing windows, use fans to cool the room, and monitor temperatures closely during hot spells.
Winter cold: If your home regularly drops below 16°C overnight, use a low-wattage heat mat on the side of the enclosure, thermostat-controlled to maintain a safe minimum of 18°C.

Heating Equipment

If supplemental heating is needed:

Heat mat with thermostat: Fix to the side of the enclosure and set to maintain a minimum of 18°C. Always use a thermostat.
Low-wattage ceramic heat emitter: A good alternative for larger enclosures. Produces heat without light and can be used overnight without disrupting the dark cycle.
Avoid heat rocks, under-tank heaters on the floor, and high-wattage basking bulbs.

Monitoring Temperature

Use a digital thermometer with a probe or an infrared temperature gun. Check at different heights in the enclosure — temperature gradients can be useful, allowing the gecko to thermoregulate by moving between warmer and cooler zones.

Humidity

Target Humidity Levels

Daytime humidity: 50–70% — allow a partial dry-out after misting
Night-time humidity: 70–80% after evening misting

Sarasinorum geckos require consistent moderate to high humidity. A regular wet-dry cycle is important to prevent bacterial and mould growth while keeping the gecko adequately hydrated.

Misting Routine

Morning mist: A light misting to restore humidity after the overnight dry-out period
Evening mist: A thorough misting ahead of the gecko’s active overnight period
Allow the enclosure to partially dry out between mistings
Mist walls, plants and décor rather than directly onto the gecko
Use dechlorinated or filtered water where possible to avoid mineral deposits

Increasing Humidity

Cover part of the mesh lid with glass or acrylic to reduce evaporation
Add live plants — these raise humidity naturally through transpiration
Use a moisture-retaining substrate such as coconut fibre or a bioactive mix
Switch to a PVC enclosure for better humidity retention
Use an automatic misting system for more consistent results

Ventilation

Good airflow is essential even at moderate-high humidity. Stagnant wet conditions promote bacteria, mould and respiratory infections. Ensure fresh air can circulate through the enclosure at all times.

Monitoring Humidity

Use a digital hygrometer placed at mid-height in the enclosure. Check before and after misting to understand your enclosure’s natural humidity cycle throughout the day.

Shedding and Humidity

Adequate humidity is critical during shedding. Signs of an approaching shed include dull, grey-toned skin and reduced activity. Increase misting slightly during this period and consider providing a humid hide lined with damp sphagnum moss. Check feet and toes after each shed and address any retained shed promptly.

Seasonal Variation

A slight seasonal drop in temperature and humidity in winter mirrors New Caledonia’s cooler dry season and can be beneficial for breeding animals. UK central heating naturally reduces indoor humidity in winter — increase misting frequency or partially cover the enclosure lid during colder months to compensate.
