Eurydactylodes geckos come from the cool, humid forests of New Caledonia and have similar environmental requirements to crested and Chahoua geckos. Their small size means they are more sensitive to rapid fluctuations in temperature and humidity than larger species, so consistency is especially important.

Temperature
Ideal Temperature Range
- Daytime ambient temperature: 18–23°C (64–73°F)
- Night-time temperature: Can drop to 16–19°C (61–66°F) — a natural overnight cool-down is beneficial
- Maximum safe temperature: Do not exceed 25–26°C for any extended period
Eurydactylodes prefer cooler conditions than most other commonly kept gecko species. They are particularly heat-sensitive — temperatures above 26°C can cause stress, and anything approaching 28°C or above can be fatal. The UK climate is generally well suited to Eurys for much of the year.
UK-Specific Advice
- Summer heatwaves: Eurydactylodes are among the most heat-sensitive geckos in the hobby. During hot spells, keep enclosures away from all windows, use fans to cool the room, and monitor temperatures closely. If room temperatures regularly exceed 25°C, consider moving the enclosure to a cooler part of the home.
- Winter cold: If your home drops below 16°C overnight, use a very low-wattage heat mat on the side of the enclosure, thermostat-controlled. Avoid over-heating — err on the cool side rather than the warm side for Eurys.
Heating Equipment
In most UK homes, supplemental heating is only needed in winter. If required:
- Low-wattage heat mat with thermostat: Fix to the side of the enclosure. Set to maintain a minimum of 18°C. Always use a thermostat.
- Very low-wattage ceramic heat emitter: An alternative for slightly larger setups. Must be thermostat-controlled.
- Never use basking bulbs, high-wattage heaters, or heat sources that could push temperatures above 24°C.
Monitoring Temperature
Use a digital thermometer with a probe or an infrared temperature gun. Check at multiple points in the enclosure — small enclosures can develop hot spots near any heat source that may not be immediately obvious.
Humidity
Target Humidity Levels
- Daytime humidity: 60–70% — allow a partial dry-out period after misting
- Night-time humidity: 80–90% after evening misting
Eurydactylodes require consistently moderate to high humidity. Their small bodies mean they can dehydrate more quickly than larger geckos if humidity drops too low. A consistent wet-dry cycle is important to prevent bacterial and mould growth.
Misting Routine
- Morning mist: A light misting to restore humidity after the overnight dry-out period
- Evening mist: A thorough misting ahead of the gecko’s active overnight period
- Allow the enclosure to partially dry out between mistings
- Mist the enclosure walls, plants and décor rather than directly onto the gecko
- Use dechlorinated or filtered water where possible
- Small enclosures can be misted with a standard plant mister — a fine spray is preferable to heavy droplets
Increasing Humidity
- Cover part of the mesh lid with glass or acrylic to reduce evaporation
- Add live plants — these raise humidity naturally through transpiration
- Use a moisture-retaining bioactive substrate
- Increase misting frequency in winter when central heating dries the air
Ventilation
Despite the need for high humidity, good airflow is essential. Stagnant wet conditions in a small enclosure can quickly lead to bacterial infections, mould growth and respiratory illness. Ensure the enclosure has cross-ventilation and allow a clear dry-out period between each misting.
Monitoring Humidity
Use a digital hygrometer inside the enclosure. Check before and after misting to understand the natural humidity cycle throughout the day. Aim to avoid prolonged periods below 50% or above 90%.
Shedding and Humidity
Adequate humidity is critical during shedding. Eurydactylodes shed in small, delicate pieces and need sufficient moisture to do so cleanly. Signs of an approaching shed include dull, slightly grey skin and reduced activity. Increase misting slightly during this period. Retained shed around the toes is the most common issue — address promptly as it can restrict circulation in small digits.
Seasonal Variation
A slight seasonal temperature and humidity variation in winter mirrors New Caledonia’s cooler dry season. In UK homes, this often happens naturally. Central heating can reduce indoor humidity significantly in winter — increase misting frequency or partially cover the enclosure lid to compensate.
