Crested Gecko Setup & Enclosure

Crested Gecko Setup & Enclosure Guide

Setting up the right enclosure is one of the most important steps to keeping a healthy crested gecko. This guide walks you through everything you need — from choosing the right tank size to creating a naturalistic environment your gecko will thrive in.

Enclosure Size

Crested geckos are arboreal, meaning they spend most of their time climbing rather than exploring floor space. Vertical height is more important than footprint.

  • Juveniles (under 10g): A small enclosure of around 30x30x45cm is ideal — too much space can make it harder for them to find food and water.
  • Sub-adults and adults: A minimum of 45x45x60cm is recommended. Bigger is always better if space allows.
  • Pairs or groups: Increase size significantly and monitor carefully for stress or dominance behaviour. Never house two males together.

Enclosure Types

  • Glass terrariums with mesh tops — great for maintaining humidity while allowing airflow. Front-opening doors make access easier and reduce stress during handling.
  • PVC enclosures — excellent for retaining humidity and heat; popular with experienced keepers.
  • Bioactive vivariums — a naturalistic setup using live plants, a drainage layer, and a clean-up crew (e.g. isopods and springtails). Low maintenance once established and highly enriching for the gecko.

Substrate

For adult crested geckos, a bioactive or coconut fibre-based substrate works well and helps maintain humidity. Avoid loose substrates for juveniles due to impaction risk — paper towel or reptile carpet is safer until they reach adult size.

Hides and Décor

Crested geckos need places to hide and feel secure, especially during the day when they're less active.

  • Provide at least two hides — one on the cooler side and one on the warmer side.
  • Add cork bark tubes, bamboo tubes, or magnetic ledges for climbing and resting spots.
  • Live or artificial plants (pothos, bromeliads, ficus) provide cover and make the enclosure more stimulating.
  • Magnetic feeding ledges are ideal for placing food dishes at height where your gecko naturally forages.

Ventilation

Good airflow is essential to prevent stagnant air and respiratory issues. Screen or mesh panels on the top and/or sides allow fresh air to circulate while still supporting humidity when misted correctly.

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Spot clean droppings and uneaten food daily.
  • Replace water in the dish every 1–2 days.
  • Full substrate change every 3–6 months for non-bioactive setups.
  • Wipe down glass with a reptile-safe cleaner as needed.
