Why does incubation media matter?

The incubation substrate plays a critical role in egg development. Reptile eggs are gas-permeable — they absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide through their shell — so the medium surrounding them must be breathable as well as moist. Too dry, and the egg desiccates and collapses. Too wet, and the egg drowns or develops mould. Getting the moisture balance right consistently is one of the most common challenges for new breeders. Just Hatch takes the guesswork out of mixing with a simple, repeatable weight-to-weight ratio.

How do I prepare Just Hatch before use?

Mix Just Hatch with water at a 1:1 ratio by weight — for example, 100g of dry media mixed with 100g (100ml) of water. Mix thoroughly until the water is evenly absorbed throughout the medium.

How do I set gecko eggs in Just Hatch?

Fill your incubation container to a depth of at least 3–4cm with the prepared medium. Make a small indent for each egg and place the egg gently into the indent — do not bury the egg fully, leave the top half exposed. Do not rotate eggs after collection, as the embryo adheres to the top of the shell shortly after laying. Close the container with a lid that allows minimal air exchange, and incubate at the appropriate temperature for the species.

What temperature should I incubate crested gecko eggs at?

Crested gecko eggs are typically incubated at room temperature — between 19–24°C is ideal, with 21–23°C being the most commonly recommended range. Avoid temperatures above 27°C, which can cause developmental issues or fatalities. Incubation duration at room temperature typically ranges from 60 to 120 days depending on temperature.

How often should I check the eggs?

Check eggs every 1–2 weeks. A firm, slightly pinkish egg that is slowly increasing in size is a good sign. Collapse, unusual discolouration, or strong odour may indicate a non-viable egg. If mould appears on the medium around a healthy-looking egg, gently remove the affected medium and replace with fresh prepared Just Hatch.
