Why do geckos need a hide?

Hides are an essential part of a well-set-up gecko enclosure. In the wild, arboreal geckos spend much of their time concealed within crevices, leaf axils, and hollow branches — emerging to feed and drink under the cover of darkness. Without a suitable hide, geckos can become chronically stressed, which suppresses appetite, immune function, and reproductive behaviour. A hide gives your gecko a secure retreat it can rely on, which is the foundation of a confident, healthy animal.

Why use an elevated hide rather than a ground hide?

Arboreal species like crested geckos and gargoyle geckos naturally seek elevation for security — they feel most exposed at ground level. A suction cup mounted hide positioned mid-to-high in the enclosure far better replicates the elevated retreats these species use in the wild, compared to a cave or hollow placed on the substrate floor. It also keeps the hide away from substrate moisture, reducing the risk of bacterial build-up inside.

Small vs Medium vs Large — which size should I choose?

The Large Hide (13 x 9 x 7cm) is the right choice for fully grown adult crested geckos (typically 35–60g+), adult gargoyle geckos, and chahoua geckos. Geckos feel most secure in a hide that fits them snugly — but a hide that's too small forces them to squeeze in uncomfortably and they may stop using it as they grow. If your gecko is approaching or at full adult size, the Large is the correct long-term choice. For juveniles and smaller adults, the Small or Medium hide will be a better fit.

How do I clean it?

Remove the hide from the glass by releasing the suction cups, rinse under warm water, and wipe the interior and exterior with a reptile-safe disinfectant. Allow to dry fully before reattaching to clean, dry glass for the best suction cup grip.
